The sadness surrounding the tragedy at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday is being felt all the way here in Alaska. Thursday evening, Anchorage School District Superintendent Deena Bishop emailed families across the district to reassure them safety in our schools is number one.

“Please know that student and employee safety remain the number one priority for the Anchorage School District,” Bishop wrote. “We continue to work with the Anchorage Police Department, with community agencies and partners, and within our own doors to learn better how to plan, prepare, and respond when tragedy occurs. ASD appreciates the diligent work of its School Resource Officers in their constant vigilance and safety work on behalf of our students and staff.”

ASD encourages all of Anchorage to take a stand against violence and work toward safety for everyone.

“Let’s continue to work together to find a way out of darkness for any individual contemplating violence into a place of hopefulness,” Bishop wrote. “ASD has in place social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies that will strengthen the services we provide to our students and families. Learning can occur best in a place of safety and security for our students. We take seriously our work and commitment to our students and all employees.”

On Wednesday, 17 people were killed after authorities say a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School opened fire inside the school. Police arrested and identified the suspect, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, about an hour after the shooting began.

Thursday Gov. Bill Walker ordered to immediately lower Alaska and U.S. Flags to half-staff in remembrance of the victims. The Governor’s order follows a directive from the White House lowering all U.S. Flags to half-staff.
