Embracing Prevention with Social-Emotional Learning

SEL for Prevention is the new look for our innovative, evidence-based social and emotional learning programs (formerly known as Camp MakeBelieve Kids). Our programs were created by Pamela Goldberg, a Child Therapist and former Critical Care Nurse with a passion for prevention.

To promote strong mental health in communities by equipping all children with essential knowledge, resources, and tools to safely and effectively manage social, emotional, and academic stressors so they may thrive.

To partner with school districts, mental health centers, and community organizations, providing them with the highest quality curricula, materials, and support at the lowest possible cost through the distribution, dissemination, and further development of the SEL for Prevention programs.

The SEL for Prevention Programs

Camp MakeBelieveKids

Our original research-based, Camp MakeBelieve Kids 8-step program has been equipping children with tools and strategies to keep them safe since 2008.

A brand new digital curriculum for upper elementary school students was recently developed as part of a longitudinal study measuring strength-based factors.

SEL for Middle School (formerly STEP UP)

The SEL for Middle School program, developed in 2013, is listed in SAMSHA’s National Registry for Evidence-Based Programs & Practices as an “effective SEL program for improving self-regulation and social competencies”—essential protective factors in the promotion of positive mental health. The Collaborative for Academic Social & Emotional Learning lists SEL for Middle School as an “Evidence-based Complimentary SEL Program,” ideal as a stand-alone prevention course or easily integrated into core subjects.

Meet our Founder

Pamela M. Goldberg, BSN, MS, LMFT

Pamela Goldberg began her career as an emergency room nurse in 1977 on the south side of Chicago in the neighborhood where she grew up. Her neighborhood was no stranger to tragedy. Teenagers, too eager to take risks, would suffer horrible consequences. In those early years, Pam provided support, encouragement, resources, and education to multitudes of distraught family members and friends left to pick up the pieces. She worked tirelessly in hospital critical care units connecting with her patients and their families on a personal level.

gldberg1In 1980, Pam earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lewis University. With a deep appreciation for the needs of children and families, she went on to receive a Master of Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Pam’s greatest professional fulfillment has come through her work as a therapist, listening to the stories of children and teens and understanding how their minds’ operate. Pam’s work with children and families came naturally as she helped children develop the tools that gave them solutions to dealing with life issues. With absolute delight, she watched children bounce back from challenges and become stronger than ever, filled with self-confidence and self-esteem. As an extension of her group counseling practice, in 1996 Pam established Camp MakeBelieve, a pioneering social and emotional learning after-school program.

Through in-depth consultation with other pioneers in the field of social and emotional learning, Pam transformed the Camp MakeBelieve Kids after-school program into an 8-Step curriculum in 2008. She developed the SEL for Middle School (formerly STEP UP) program for middle school-aged children in 2013. In 2016, she updated the original Camp MakeBelieve program and created a digital curriculum for upper elementary school children.

Pam currently resides in the Las Vegas, NV area, where she runs a private counseling practice and continuously participates in furthering the research and development of her programs. In her free time, she practices yoga, enjoys her family and travels with her supportive husband, a talented emergency room physician.
